Kevin, I wish I could do a better job telling you about the ceramics; I
have a magazine at home in Japanese, but it is pretty tough sledding
for me, as I do not care for kanji. I hope to get a translation in
time from EMTrading.com

I believe the ceramics have an anti-bacterial effect and also counter
various pathogenic molds and such -- the local shop puts a a few pipes
in their big aquarium to keep the water balanced. Folks here put them
in the bathtub (the water is used by all family members once or twice or
thrice before changing the tub -- expensive water here.) People also
put ceramic rings in the rice cooker and hot-water pot.

I have ceramic balls in the gas thank of my van; there is a big boost
in power, for reasons that largely elude me. Something about
clustering the gasoline molecules. I have four pipes around my
computer; they cut down the nasty electrmagnetic frequencies quite
noticably. I am quite sure as I am sensitive to these fields. Bottom
line though is that I really do not grasp what these ceramics are doing.
  I am open to learning.
