Hi Gary; I suspect the infection may be 'cooking' in the eustachian - warm, wet, relatively undisturbed, 'specially in those of us with narrow ones and/or sinus trouble. Perhaps dropping liquid into the outer ear stimulates the eustachian to open or dry up a bit?
