Actually, it is my understanding that the silver nitrate was used to pretect the infant from possible contraction of venereal disease from the mother. That is what I heard in basic military training in the 1950s. Back in those days, they also used silver nitrate in houses of ill repute to also prevent contraction of venereal disease. I don't know if it used currently.
