TJ and list- I was backlogged with email and just read about TJ's battle.
I would encourage people not to put their eggs all in one basket. I was
using all kinds of herbs, vitamins, minerals, and very important to TJ's
condition- HEAT to cure all kinds of conditions before I got interested in
CS this year. Perhaps there are some bad effects from heating pads and
their coils but to me that is balanced by results as I can tell you from
experience that sufficient HEAT kills ALL bacteria and viruses, in areas it
can reach, like the face. I have used a heating pad on my face (I have a
sinus mask with eye holes- fold a regular pad to avoid the eyes) for many
sinus infections and it is wonderful. In a short time I would feel a
popping as all the congested fluids started to break up and drain. There
is also wonderful relief from pain from the heat. I have used it for sore
throats, abdominal, and lung pain as well and would be able to sleep
pain-free (though the heat can bring some discomfort). A caution is to put
a towel between your body and the pad and NEVER sleep on top of the pad but
always have it on top. I did get a small burn from sleeping on one once.
However, my last 2 colds I put droppers of CS up my nose and never got a
sinus infection! Taking CS and then dropping straight Echinacea into my
sore throat took away the pain and cured it right away. That's progress :-)

As for herbs, get a pictorial herb book like Penelope Ody's and ID your
local weeds. Ribwort (lance-leaf) Plantain is described as the #1
heat-clearing herb by Peter Holmes in his 2 volume "The Energetics of
Western Herbs," (hard to find- I ordered it direct from Snow Lotus) a
Chinese medicine approach to the commonest plants found as weeds all over
the US and perhaps in your backyard. If not, I can send you some seeds and
your lawn won't thank me. And they are powerful medicine. I cured myself
from a bladder infection with blood in the urine in 5 hours drinking lots
of Essiac tea and blending Ribwort Plantain and Cleavers (antibiotic and a
lymph cleanser) in water and straining the green drink.

Here are some quotes about Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) from Holmes-
1. Clears toxic heat, reduces inflammation, relieves swelling; promotes
detoxification, removes lymph congestion, reduces allergy and relieves
eczema: Microbial toxicosis with toxic heat- boils, inflammations,
abscesses, fever, red or dry, crusty skin rashes, itching
EYE, MOUTH, THROAT, GUM, AND MIDDLE EAR INFLAMMATIONS (esp acute,
infectious or allergic, from bacterial infection, wth purulence and mucus);
SEPTICEMIA (local or systemic);
VENOMOUS BITES from insects, spiders or snakes;
IMMEDIATE ALLERGIES- rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, otitis media, eczema
LYMPHADENITIS- swollen glands.

2.Clears heat, resolves mucus damp, stops discharge, promotes astriction
and stops bleeding:
head damp heat (sinuses, nasal discharges), RHINITIS;
intestines damp heat, ENTERITIS, dysentery, diarrhea, leucorrhea;
bladder damp heat- URINARY INFECTIONS, kidney infections;
Blood heat- spontaneous bruising or bleeding, skin rashes, hemorrhage.

3. Tonifies urinary QI, harmonizes urination and relieves incontinence

4. Promotes expectoration, resolves phlegm heat (thick yellow sputum
w/blood, pus), restores the lungs and relieves coughing; circulates lung QI
and relieves wheezing:
BRONCHITIS, LARYNGITIS, COUGH, ASTHMA.

5. Promotes tissue repair and reduces contusion and pain:
WOUNDS, ULCERS, BRUISES
TOOTHACHE, earache, headache, facial neuralgia,
BURNS, scalds.

Best use- fresh expressed juice. Crush for topical application
