My advice is to buy one from a reputable company that is familiar with
the local water. Some time in the early 80's before we were married, my
now wife bought a Multi-Pure (one of those multi-level marketing
companies) carbon block water filter while she was living in Hawaii, and
apparently the filter worked fine there. However, when we hooked that
filter up to the awful municipal water here in SE Iowa those filter
cartridges would fail in about 30 days. After quickly going through two
of those $50 cartridges we put in a whole house charcoal filter that
backwashes every six days and a reverse osmosis system for
drinking/cooking water.
