Kids' best friends: Pets help prevent allergies August 28, 2002 Posted: 5:39 AM EDT (0939 GMT) They're thought to force the body's immune system into developing a response pattern that's less likely to lead to allergic reactions. And I love this last line: "The bottom line," says Ownby, "is that maybe part of the reason we have so many children with allergies and asthma is we live too clean a life." ********************* HI Connie, There was a piece on this subject recently -- the basis for the statement is the result of research into the Immune System. The author suggested that when we are in a very clean environment, the immune system gets weakened from lack of use due the level of clean that is possible with all of the antibiotic products that are available to consumers who have "learned" that if they can kill all the germs (antibiotic soaps and sprays) and allergens (whole - house HEPA type air filters i n the Heat/A C system and on the carpet sweeper) that they will protect themselves and their families from illness. My grand mother was fond of saying "You have to eat a peck of dirt before you'll die." this usually came after someone had dropped something they were eating. She missed being 90 years old by 2 weeks. Jack
