Just to clear up a few things :) If one does not add extra OH- ions to the mix, then the talk of sodium hydroxide (Na+ OH-) is redundant.
The sodium ions take no part in the reaction (Ag+ + Cl- => AgCl), and are called spectator ions. Sodium ions cannot ionise anything as they are already oxidised, sodium metal on the other hand reacts violently with water.
