Yesterday I poured a bowl of CS/tap water mix for my dog and sat it outside on the step. Within a few seconds, the water turned purple (clear lavendar/purple). In another minute it turned pink. Then it soon turned orange, and finally yellow, all within a few minutes. It stayed yellow until it was accidentally dumped. Now I have bacteria-free steps.
My question: Why the color changes? My tap water is from a well that has very high iron content. The water goes through an iron filter and a water softener. I've mixed my CS with my tap water for a couple of months and never observed the color change before. What's up? I expect an answer from all you chemist-minded types out there.
