Hi Marjie The unit is actually 12 volts DC and it comes with a power converter (transformer) that plugs in the wall You can order the adapter that will let you use it in the car or you can make your own adapter The 2 plugs are available at Radio Shack You do not need the battery pack to run it unless you want to run it where you have no 110 volts AC or 12 volts DC (with that adapter) Bob
