An occupational hazard for carpet removers is lead poisoning. This is not because the carpet is made from lead but is because of lead in the environment from leaded gasoline etc which gets into and collects in the carpet. This hazard may be decreasing as leaded gasoline is not used so much anymore (in USA). If you are in an area that puts out insecticide to control insects or termites, etc, I bet you will have plenty of it in your carpets!
