Hi Catherine, Any ultrasonic type unit will do the job. It would be identified on the box. They usually indicate the method of operation in the specifications. As I recall, the Vicks machines proudly proclaim in big print.
The vibration entrains the silver particles and they rise in the mist column. It is a cold mist rather than steam. Very easy to inhale. I'm not familiar with any other brand but there may be some others. I use the Vicks unit and it works splendidly.
