In the scientific and engineering world, the Greek symbol "mu" written as the symbol "µ" is a prefix for micro (one millionth or 10^-6). This is internationally accepted notation.
However, the U.S. FDA does not recognize "µg" to mean micrograms. The FDA insists that "mcg" be used to express micrograms and "mg" be used for milligrams on product labels. We learned this the hard way after printing 60,000 product labels that used "µg" to mean micrograms.
