Don't worry - you'll get things sorted out in no time.

The markings on the switch may be "200 mA" and ".200 mA". The last one 
means 200 uA.

I hesitate to suggest this, but you can cheat and stuff aluminum foil in 
the fuse holder, then stick the probes on your tongue and see if you get 
a reading on the lowest current range. If you do get a reading, you need 
a fuse and a resistor.

If not, try checking the ohms function by shorting the probes together. 

Sometimes the fuse is in series with the ohms circuitry. If you do not 
get a low reading, even with aluminum foil in the fuse holder, the meter 
is bad and should be sent back.
 
BTW, I was trying to think of a good way to mount the resistor on the 
probe. There isn't. So the best thing to do is put it in series with one 
of the battery leads.

But be careful and never short the rods for any length of time. A brief 
short won't hurt, but there is enough energy in the batteries to burn out 
the resistor if you let it.
