I believe that the ionic combines with the HCl in the stomach
immediately and is basically removed from action. What is left is the
particulate, which even though only 10 to 20%  the original amount, is
still sufficient to be very effective.

For topical, larger particle, or higher concentration particle seems to
be better, and there is reason to believe that the ionic can also play a
very important role. The ionic is what will allow the injured cells to
revert to stem cells, allowing improved healing, and lack of scarring.
Also the ionic would be more likely to get further into the tissues than
particulate, even though particulate is better as a germacide,
especially if mixed with a little DMSO.

So for topical I think a mix of the two is really best.
