It was a secondary but quite significant effect. The original usage came from several reasons. Much of it was historical, when the "gods" indicated that these metal had great worth to them (this is in the Old testament, but forget that, it is in the Summarian tablets as translated by Stitchen as well). Also, these metals or fairly rare, excellent for making jewlery giving them an intrinsic worth. Lastly, they are coin metals, which can be easily alloyed and made into durible coins.
