If your wire is round then use a caliper or micrometer and measure the diameter. Then go to http://www.coasteltools.com/tech_wire_gauge_conversion_chart.htm and look in the green column for the diameter. Read the gauge off the blue column.
If the wire is square then multiply the measurement by 4/pi before using the chart.
