To All, I received three copies of a virus addressed to [email protected]
This was my previous Silver List address, and it was never used anywhere else. Probably someone caught it and it mailed copies to everyone in their address book. It won't execute on my system since I run Win 3.1 just for this reason. But I decoded it and it tries to open TCP ports. It seems to be the Bugbear virus, which is spreading rapidly. See http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=9880 If you have not installed the recent Microsoft patches, many viruses can install themselves even if you don't click on the email. They can do anything, such as get your credit card info, record your keystrokes and send them back to a host, scramble your hard disk, destroy your flash bios, etc. Check out the latest antivirus software for updates. Unfortunately, these are only updated after many people have suffered the tender mercy of the latest virus. For them, it's too late. I don't know of a good defense except to run Linux or an old version of Windows. I have both, and prefer Windows since it's compatible with DOS. Good luck.
