The answer is a bit simpler. He is sixteen and the girls love him. Every 
time he gets a new girlfriend, he gets bad cold sores. Once, I got them 
also even though I have no contact with him.

I told him where they were coming from, and put him on a strict regime. 
One mouthful every two days, and stop using my soap.

The problem stopped.
