Tell this older gentleman that the Atkins diet has the blessings of the New
England Journal of Medicine and Harvard Medical School, plus a couple other
organizations that I can't recall at this time.

Sorry about the heading, I just replied to an earlier post and left the
heading in.
This is not an Atkins diet warning!
Now there was an older gentleman at this same wedding who came to me and
told me that since he eats vegetarian, he has lost 40 lbs. kept if off for
three months, and is no longer diabetic.
I told him that this is interesting and I am glad for him that he has found
what works for him. But, I also told him that I hope he understands that
each one of us is unique and what works for one, may not for the other. He
wanted to tell me that the Atkins diet does not work, it kills people, etc
.
. . I told him that this is just his opinion but he must realize there are
many people on the Atkins diet that are doing great and it has also helped
them overcome health problems!
Why did I share this? To make a point, The point is that there is not just
one road to health and happiness. Each one of us must find what we need and
what works for us. I believe I can be happy with my diet and lifestyle, and
pleased with my good health, but I don't have to belittle someone who does
differently from what I do.
Best regards to all,
Orpha

Why should this be an Atkins diet warning? What your cousin is on isn't
the Atkins diet. I've used the Atkins diet with great success, it does
allow vegetables and fruits, but not during the first couple of weeks.
Most people erroneously call it a high protein diet, when it isn't, it's a
low carb diet. The theory is that the body uses up carbs before it attacks
fat. On the Atkins diet, your body has very few carbs, so it burns the
fat
for energy. My cholesterol dropped about 100 points during the first 3
weeks.
The big problem with the Atkins diet is that you do have to give up a lot
of
foods that you really like, you have to be extremely determined to stick
with it.

Dear Sara Joy and all,
I just came back from a wedding this past weekend where I saw my one LARGE
cousin who likes what he calls the Atkins diet. He was at the same table as
I was at the reception, he leaned my way and said, "Yeah Orpha, I am on the
Atkins diet again, I guess I will try to lose some weight."
I asked him, "So what do you eat?" And he answers, "Meat and Cheese." I
asked him if he eats any vegetables and he said, "No, I do not like to go
to
the bathroom much while I am on the road." (he is a trucker)
I looked at him and said, "Do you realize that you are going to kill
yourself if you eat only meat and cheese?!!! You may need some meat, and
may
like it very much, but you are going to ruin your kidneys if that is all
you
eat?!!!"
He shrugged his shoulders and said, "Hmmm, you think so? Well, I would
rather just eat what I like and not worry about all that."
The bottom line is, he does not care. I love this boy, he is my age, should
be in the prime of his life but doesn't care about his health. It is hard
for me to see him do this to himself but I have learned that you can only
help and encourage people that want it. If someone does not care about
their
health, and does not want to do anything about it, you are wasting your
time
by talking to them!
But he is my cousin and I will not give up yet, maybe he will come around
one of these days. This guy is about 5 ft. 5 inches and around 350-400 lbs.
Anyone on this group tried eating meat and cheese only for a period of time
like a month or two?
This guy won't take nutritional supplements either.
Thanks for sharing so that we all can learn!
Orpha
