I buy whole chickens on sale if possible for as cheap as $.59-.88 per
pound, and eat them with green vegetables instead of rice or other
starches.  There should be some great turkey buys coming up in the next
week if you have freezer space.  I also use eggs as a protein source since
they are cheap, and eat them also with green vegetables like celery, or
with raw cauliflower.  Actually, I keep ducks in a moveable run so they eat
grass every day and have healthy eggs.

The vegetables are expensive also compared to eating pasta or big bowls of
rice, or other starches.  That can motivate you to be a gardener and grow
your own.  I live in zone 8 and can grow kale and collards here outside
without protection all winter, and am building a cold frame to try to grow
spinach and lettuce all winter.

It is also possible even in winter to grow sprouts and save a lot over
buying lettuce in the grocery store.  My favorite sprouts are fenugreek (a
legume with a nice taste, the dry seed can also be ground and used in food
or made into tea which is good for coughs), and lentils.  Broccoli, clover,
and mung beans are also popular but sometimes if a mung bean isn't alive it
not only doesn't sprout but also stays hard so I have bitten into them,
which isn't pleasant.  Sprouts actually do better in the winter as hot
summer weather makes them spoil more easily.  I have a Bioset sprouter from
Johnny's Select Seeds with siphoning action and 4 levels, which is supposed
to be able to have water added to the top level only a couple of times a
day and then the water siphons down to the bottom and keeps the seeds humid
but drained.  It can build up some bacteria or yeasts if not rinsed enough,
and I bleach with Oxy-clean when the sprouts are done.
