There are several theories on this. 1] ions do form salts on contact with saline or hydrochloric acids [AgCl] AgCl is still an effective germ fighter though only 1/10th as effective as straight silver. It is not very soluable, but then, neither are metallic particles. If the AgCl molecules are formed individually from individual silver ions, they may be small enough to penetrate membranes and cell walls...and get back out.
2] It's the small metallic particles that do most of the work. Metallic particles are not the least bit soluable, nor does saline or hydrocloric acid affect them, but some or all are small enough to penetrate membranes and cell walls. 3] metallo transport protiens partially or completely protect and transport ions Then there's a possible revelation...[off the cuff speculation? I'm playing with it now...with some degree of possibly subjective confirmation. ie: It's "looking like" so and so and such and such...so far. :-)] Chemists..please do correct me. Silver hydroxide?? [an intermediate unstable and highly soluable...spelled "bio-available"... compound that forms when making CS with electricity and water] may protect silver ions long enough for them to reach a remote site whereupon a silver particle might cascade off and form a small silver metallic particle 'on site' when the silver hydroxide destabilizes back into silver and water. In other words, a TE may form partially 'in vivo' and the ionic CS associated with water molecules being quite well dispersed, will form extremely small particles when the hydroxide does destabilize. Sulpher levels might even play a role. Any free radicals floating around might even help with transporting ions. [and be neutralized in the process?]. All we know for sure is that something gets there somehow and does something that more or less does the job. The main barrier and variable... is delivery.
