Hi gang, This has been a frequent topic of discussion in the past. It's good to bring it up again for the newer members.
I believe claims that CS "doesn't kill the good bacteria" are mostly marketing hype. In effect, it is sort-of true, but as the information is usually presented it is clearly wrong. CS will kill almost any bacteria we know of, with the exception of some strange bugs from some silver-rich soil deposits that have adapted somehow. None of those effect us. CS will not, however, distinguish "good" bacteria from "bad." It *will* kill the gut flora if it can get there. That's the other issue. Modest quantities of CS will not produce high enough levels in the gut to have much effect. Even fairly large doses seem to be tolerated by some people at times. This gives rise to the illusion that it "doesn't kill good bacteria." Our best guess is that CS in a healthy gut is not mobile enough to reach and neutralize all the bacteria. The medium is too thick for CS to move around and tends to neutralize it. For folks with the stomach flu or other conditions that cause severe diarrhea, a big slug of CS can possibly be taken and have very rapid good effect for the simple reason that it will get to the infection, there being nothing to stop it! There are reports from some people (me for one), that over use of CS for an extended period of time can damage the flora and disrupt digestion and absorption of nutrients. The answer is to restore the flora periodically with the usual yogurt, probiotics, or other source of healthy bacteria. Hope that helps. Mike D.
