I would really like an answer to this question if anybody has one. There is a whole school of thought that says activated oxygen (free radicals) is good for the body because it cleans out other free radicals and destroys pathogens without harming healthy cells. The most vocal proponent of this is Ed McCabe. In his book (Flood Your Body With Oxygen) he states that "Singlet oxygen is the beneficial free radical. It oxidizes or eats up all of the harmful free radicals left over from the incomplete combustion in our cells." (p61) He also has many glowing testamonials about the benefits of ozone treatments, h2o2, and other oxygen products.
But I have been hearing a lot lately that free radicals of oxygen are the villains in the aging process. According to this theory, the cells have some defense against free radicals of oxygen, but eventually that breaks down and then they are damaged by these free radicals in the process we call aging. These theories seem to contradict each other. Which one is correct? Or can they both be right? This is more than an academic question to me, because I have started using some of McCabe's recommended oxygen protocols (in addition to colloidal silver). I am using Oxymune and homozone (which releases ozone into the digestive tract) daily, and adding 8oz of 35% food grade h2o2 to my bath two to three times a week. I have seen real benefits from these therapies, but this talk about damage from free radicals of oxygen makes me a little nervous. [some types of Electric motors produce a lot of ozone] Both are highly corrosive substances and are not to be taken lightly. They will eat human flesh just as readily as a power drill cord or any thing else. They essentially sterilize water by 'burning' the microbes and they don't discriminate between them and pieces of you. I think these qualify as the free radicals that everyone is trying to avoid and neutralize with vitamins etc? Poison poison poison, but sometimes poison used right and in the face of something worse can be beneficial. At least when ozone and peroxide break down, all that's left is water or oxygen...and whatever byproducts that were made in the process... whatever it 'ate' along the way. Just be careful with this stuff. Ode -- The Silver List is a moderated forum for discussing Colloidal Silver.
