I don't have documentation but once had to amputate a duck's leg mid-drumstick because of a very bad break with no blood return. I soaked her stump in CS a couple times a day and applied salve and a bandage. By 3 weeks new skin had formed over the end of the bone. :-) She is still alive over a year later, hops around, and swims like a duck.
