Hi Linda, A quick wipe with a clean dry paper towel is usually good enough to remove all the loose black or brown stuff. To prevent losing good valuable silver I avoid any abrasive cleaning material.
As a generality, nylon is a tough, smooth, fairly slippery, plastic with which holds its shape quite well. Err, you could use a toothbrush or something like that if you want to follow those instructions. I'd recommend NOT to use steel wool, or 3m or Scotch abrasive pads or any of the cleaning liquids or pastes.
