James:
I think you hit the nail exactly on the head.
I made a gallon batch of clear cs with my 777 that was estimated at 20 ppm.
Then I reduced it until it became golden.( I did this by pouring it into a well cleaned coffee carafe and placing it on a coffee maker hot plate) I kept track of the approximate ammt. of liquid that I evaporated out, then I added in the same amount of distilled water. The liquid then became clear again. I was concentrating for the purpose of making a stronger gel solution but got carried away with experimenting. Had to do it all over again.
So I am sure, as you said , concentration is the key to color.

It will go golden beyond a certain concentration, regardless of whether the
electrodes have been contaminated. The contamination increases conductivity
and makes a higher yield; that is what causes the color change.

No Wayne I do not take Golden Seal.
Initially I was just not as careful of handling the electrodes with my hands
or with what was sprayed in the area where it is set up. I know I
contaminated one batch by spraying vinegar water when cleaning the counters
in that area.

Morning Garnet,

The only time I get golden is if I have contaminated the electrodes by
touching them with my hands.

Sounds as if you have done this more than once and confirmed the cause.

Have you by chance been taking "Golden Seal"?

I realize we have oils and amino acids on the hands. In the past, people have told me this effects our ability to catch fish, possibly due to
the smell of these acids.
