A truly unusual being.  He would draw complex machines. Build forms, cast
the major parts, machine them, and assemble them and run them.   Then he
would take them apart and inspect the failures and correct the design. He
did this entirely in his imagination. Then he would draw up plans and have
the machines made.   in the physical world and it would behave exactly as he
predicted.

Did you actually talk with him?

 I believe the hotel let him stay there for free in one of the less
desirable rooms [without maid service?] because his fame drew people to the
hotel.  I think I read that Tesla became a fixture in the dining room.
People would buy his meals just to talk with him?  I'd buy him dinner.

 Tesla could have been wealthy, but he just wasn't interested in money.
