When I had a computer shop some years ago, I saw
several hard drives that viruses had made inoperable,
reformat or not. They did this by somehow messing up
certain locations on the hard drive where start-up
files must be recorded. With no ability to record the
start-up info in these locations, no start-up is
possible. The hard drive could be used as a secondary
drive for storing info, but not a primary drive.
