Many l-o-o-o-o-ng years ago when I was in the chicken-egg business,we were not allowed to wash the eggs as it would wash off the protective layer which protected the egg.This protective layer would let the egg stay fresh much longer as in those days,very few people had refrigerators.To get the crud off,we used sandpaper,and, let me tell you,that sure took the glamour out of chicken raising.Picture it;every day ,with several thousand eggs having to be graded and checked for crud,and a fair percentage having to be sanded;not fun.
