E.F.G Herrington's text Zonal Melting Of Organic Chemicals (John Wiley, 1963) describes many organic compounds that have been successfully purified that are less convenient than DMSO regarding volatility, freezing temperature, toxicity, handling, availability, etc. It might be possible to make DMSO zonal refing apparatus from a bulkheaded angel-food cake mold on a veeerry slow turntable spot-heated by an incandescent lamp.
