I am not sure you will avoid all contamination, but but if you use iron, then I don't think any contamination would be of much consequence anyway. I would clean the top of an anvil and a hammer and use that. Make sure all oils and rust have been removed. If you are concerned that there is any contamination then you might polish the surface with an emery cloth after flattening, and use sodium hydroxide for degreasing. Then rinse thoroughly.
