Hi Lea Ann,

First of all, stop and take a deep breath! ... There!

Now...

> My 2 year old son ... woke up with a temperature of 104 Celsius.

That would be Farenheit! <cough>

> He was inconsolable and complained that his eyes, ears, neck, and legs
> hurt. Basically, for a 2 year old I "think" he is describing over-all
> body aches.

Sure sounds like a bad case of the flu I had once.

> I have a call in to his doctor but he has not called back yet.

Good! That's essential.

*IF* I remember right, temperatures up to 104 are not that unusual or
dangerous in a child that age. Watch it closely, of course, and
remember the idea of a tepid bath to help cool him down quickly if it
climbs much more than that. Get in the tub with him yourself if that
makes it easier for you both. Don't be in there so long he gets
chilled.

The poor guy will be miserable, but you're the best person on planet
earth to help with that. <grin>

Back when we had kids that age I didn't know about CS. If it was
looking to be too hard on him, we'd have given the appropriate dose of
liquid children's Tylenol to bring it down a bit. You'll need to decide
if you want to give him something like that and how much.

As for CS, please realize that it won't immediately bring down the
fever, but will have to kill some germs first, which his body is then
going to have to clear, which might even make him feel worse. That's
called a Herx reaction, and they can be pretty severe, so go slow.

Remember the caution we talked about before: Unless he's already had
some so that you *know* he tolerates it, then give only a tiny bit at
first to make sure there's no nasty reaction. Then experiment with a
little more after a couple of hours or more, if you believe it to be
safe. A few ounces spread out over the course of the day would sound
*about* right to me, but it's only a guess.

Keep in mind that the conventional treatment I mentioned above is still
available. Then wait for your doctor to call... or call back and pester
him/her again! <grin>

> I KNOW that no one can dispense medical advice and that we are only
> talking about experimenting.

That's right. I'm not a doctor, I'm just a dad with three tiny kids
that are all now teenagers. I still remember a few of those long nights
spent comforting a kid that really felt lousy. <whew!> Next stop
grandkids... though not *real* soon, thank goodness!

> So far I've mixed the CS 50/50 with water and put it in his water
> bottle. Would you give it straight? Would you dilute it more?

So long as you've tried him with CS before, then you would just need to
watch the fever and his discomfort level to judge how he's responding.
Build up slowly, back off if he gets worse. Watch like a hawk. Listen
carefully to your doctor when he/she gets back to you. Then decide what
is the right thing for you to do.

You'll do allright, ma'am. You're the mom!

Peace,

Mike D.
