Many many years ago I remember the old timers saying to stop fungus, mold and algae from growing on trees, get copper clouts[small nails] and drive them in around the base of the tree.About 1 to 2 inches apart. This is not a quick fix,but slow acting. The sap dissolves the copper and distributes it to every part of the tree. These clouts are about 3/4 of an inch long. The thickness of the bark determines the length of the nail to be used. This is similar to using zinc strips on the ridge line of homes to stop the same thing happening on roofs.
