The "theys" are at cross purposes with each other. If the planetary ecology is to survive civilization, fewer people is now a mandate. If governments are to survive spending on social programs and infrastucture upgrades... ever increasing numbers of taxpayers and ever increasing GNPs are a mandate.
The balance point has been crossed. China and India are beginning to tip the teeter totter badly as they enter the "modern" age in their billions. Either the first set of 'theys' wins out or the planetary egology wipes the second set out. [Oops..I meant 'ecology'] Either way reduces the population. It's just a question of how. Unless something new breaks, 'when' is almost predictable to within a few years. [Most likely within your kids lifetime] If something new does break...more and more people to bust the new system and the crash [involving even MORE people] just gets delayed. Ever stop to wonder why so many young people are so self destructive these days? An unsustainable cycle will cycle into destruction. It's just a common sense given. The only difference between people and cancer cells is that people have an [unused] ability to consciously make choices to prevent overcoming the host body. ..But everyone wants 'everyone else' to stop crowding things up, right? First set "theys" are the equivalent to our immune system operating in spite of lack of awareness...kill un-self-controlled replicators before they replicate more mindless replicators, or chemotherapy will be the only available path to survival of any sort of organized existance and any appreciable numbers of people in general. [Essentially, mandated bio-war?] Failure inevitably leads to an Heck of a Herx, or near total death with a period of coma. It's 'everyone else' in this parking lot that jambed up the traffic. [True enough] Also true, every new road built to handle increasing traffic eventually goes to a new traffic jam. The ONLY "solution" is to reduce traffic. Since everyone wants to drive, the only way to do that is to have fewer people 'to' drive. Like Zappa said, we are the other people. They're the other people too. If the first set of "theys" get their way, things will go much easier in the long run and won't dip nearly as low in the process. I would think that the ideal solution would be the fabrication of a highly communicable virus that renders 7/8th of everyone infertile without making anyone very ill for very long. That way, no one has to die and overall population decreases dramatically in a single generation. Our few children would all be wealthy and valuable beyond belief...each and every one of them. It was the Black Death that ushered in democracy and prosperity, ending that European dark age and made technology development necessary leading to the industrial age. Before that, labor was cheap and almost everyone was hungry. Now labor is getting cheap again, but technology coupled with numbers is threatening the planet itself, not just a continent. "Crashes" carry a Hell of a lot of inertia. It's very likely that the only part that doesn't get bent will be a tail light. But even that doesn't do much without the battery that was under the hood. Will your great great great grandchildren be making stone tools while steel rusts away? "We" could eliminate the need for a first set "they" by simply doing what makes sense, but we don't. [Why we don't doesn't change a thing] Second set 'theys' don't make sense either. That set of 'theys' are OUR scapegoats. What they do is take the responsibility for us not making sense. Their job is to give us what we want, not what we need..and they 'will' rip us off to do it now and then. Then We bitch, they resign, we hire some new 'bread and circuses' henchmen to blame... and the beat goes on. Bye bye now. See ya'll in the new Dark Ages where the seeds of a new cycle of forgetfullness and denial will be sprouting. Some say this present age is, what, the 5th time we didn't remember to take stock? ..and whatever sequence of forces and entities that started 'this' cycle says, "Oops, that weren't it either. Oh well, clean out the petrie dish with another snow ball and try again in a 20 thousand or so years." Closer, but still no cigar. What's this I hear about "hyrids"? Plan 'N' in the works? ...ever stop to think that "we" might be hybrids from the last failed model? It's interesting that we consider ourselves human but don't generally consider the previous model human. There were so few of them found, much more intelligent than we thought and no longer lived in long gone sky scrapers... What would any good farmer do? BTW Check out "Forbidden Archeology" Does "found in gold bearing layers" strike any bells? Has anyone reading the recent Da Vinci Code noted the existance of UFO like objects in the skies depicted in several of his works? ..and similar objects appearing on very old gold coins?
