Jan Mezzenga, a Crow Wing County [Minnesota] deputy, contracted three
tick-borne diseases -- and nearly died when one made his spleen rupture.
The three were:
Babesiosis is a rare, malaria-like, tick-borne illness that can attack
the liver and central nervous system.
Ehrlichiosis, another tick-related illness, is similar to Rocky Mountain
spotted fever with common symptoms of sudden high fever, fatigue, major
muscle aches, severe headaches and rash.
Lyme disease is the most common of serious tick diseases in Minnesota,
with 4,337 cases reported between 1983 and 2002, according to the
Minnesota Department of Health.
