It doesn't seem to be. I use a good slug of CS in each birdbath when we
clean and refill them every evening. Sometimes I let it go without a
week or so. But mostly we put it in. It helps keep the baths from
getting that pink slime, and it did get rid of the black/green stuff
(algae?) in the bird fountain, too.
We have been doing this for years, and I think if it hurt the birds,
with the numbers we get daily, we'd be seeing a lot of dead ones. As it
is the rate of disease we see in the birds is now almost none. We used
to see a lot of those deformed, bald swollen eyes, and bald lumps on
their heads. I forget what the name of the diseases are, but I looked
them up once, and they are very contagious. Our birdfeeding area is
largish, and we have a lot of feeders and a large number of bird
visitors daily. During the day, the birdbaths get rinsed out and
re-filled at least once a day in addition to the evening rinse and fill,
sometimes up to 3 times a day because they get so dirty.

Yes, I'm sure it would improve the germ
quality of the water, but do you think it would
be detrimental to the birds digestive tracts?
