PPM does not drop, conductivity drops. They are not the same thing and a multimeter is about the worst tool to measure either. A conductivity or even a TDS meter is a fairly good tool to measure conductivity, but it doesn't measure PPM...but it can give you some sort of 'idea' what it is even if it's not doing "that".
Using a conductivity meter to get PPM is like counting apples to see how many oranges you have in a basket. Apples and oranges are 'about' the same size...then.. the marbles [metallic particles and undissolved compounds] in the basket are another PPM guess which meters are completely blind to. You can see 'most' of the marbles with a laser pointer, usually...but no 'numbers' flash out of 'my' eyeballs and there are probably some in varying quanities that can't be seen that way.
