CS>Gray sludge

I don;t know what to think...when the rods start getting thin do they 
contribute to a gray buildup on the rods....or I also took off the stone on the 
end of the tubing of the air pump....no instead of the black buildup I am 
getting gray and rubbed between the fingers looks like a silver paste...thanks 
folks....deb
