In my corner of the world which encompasses many alternative thinking types (almost a subculture unto their own) in the USA, the verb "gift" as a verb is used often and is not uncommon at all and the term almost carries a sense of a little blessing of support or empowerment that is relayed with the object or opportunity that is given from one to the other.
To "gift" someone is very common within Native American culture in the US also. It is particularly common to "gift" a spiritual teacher or ceremonial leader for their service, when a payment would be considered offensive. Who ever said that it has not been used in America for a long time was wrong and they probably need to climb off their University pedestal and take a walk around the country. To me language is a living. breathing, fluid medium that can paint a world of experience outside of the norm. Although some may consider it dumbed down, perhaps they are not always understanding the nuance of emotion, thought or cultural idiosyncrasy that has evolved within a particular cultural context that comes from the shared experiences and involvement of the members of a social group. What does this have to do with CS? Nothing.. ; )) Barb
