Thanks Rowena, Terry & Dan for your replies.

The staph infection is present in the spine and in the groin muscle. The man
had back surgery in March and the infection started then, he was in hospital
for 3 weeks. They operated three times and thought they'd gotten it but it
was found to be present again in mid-August so he had surgery again. They
took out all of the hardware (screws and rod) from the first surgery. The
infection was present around one of the screws and all in his groin muscles.
He was very weak from having been in unrelenting pain for six weeks previous
to this surgery & was in critical condition for over a week. The infection
must have been present for weeks again before he had the 2nd surgery in
August. He has recovered enough to be sent to an extended-care facility but
bloodwork shows the staph infection is still present.

I am very grateful for any help anyone can offer with this.

Claire
