Everyone is different. I had all amalgams replaced by composites ten years
ago. The dentist was a holistic oriented one but didn't take extreme
measures to protect me. I had no bad reactions as he did his work over a few
weeks.
So I'm not hyper sensitive or who knows what.
But I did feel 20% better in general after the procedure. So I'm sensitive
enough to feel that.
Some are sensitive enough to need a Hal Huggins http://www.hugnet.com/ type
of approach to amalgam removal. His is very protective against bad reactions
to the mercury unloosed

Hello Jonathan,
I think that how you react to "regular" removal proceedures may depend on
your body burden of mercury. I haven't been tested but I strongly suspect
that I am mercury toxic. I have been having a few amalgams replaced here
and there by a "regular" dentist and the only precaution he can use is a
rubber dam. Every time I have an amalgam removed I am nearly bedridden
for two months.
I sure wish that I could get IV vitamin C during and after the proceedure
as well as have a separate air supply - those are things that the
"biological" dentists use in their protocol.
I don't have too many amalgams left. I've looked into going to Tijuana,
Mexico but keep putting it off. I just procrastinate until I forget how
bad the last round made me feel then go back to my regular dentist and do
it again...

I had all mine removed by a dentist here in Japan. I was aware of the
calls for special precautions but disregarded these. They seemed
exaggerated to me, after having amalgams for something like 30 years.
(They are durable, that is for sure.)
I did not suffer any ill effects that I could discern, but have noticed
health improvements since having the amalgams replaced. The composites
are of course much less unsightly.
From what I have seen, the amalgam removal specialists charge very high
fees.
