I have one implant. The post is titanium. The bone does grow around it
and closes up any gaps, you can see this in x-rays of my implant from
the first one the day it was put in, to later ones taken to check bone
growth progress. The crown (artificial tooth) isn't put on until the
post is solid in the jaw from new bone growing tightly around it. At
least that is how mine was done.
Unfortunately mine is not put in at quite the right angle, making the
fake tooth that is attached to it have a gap at the upper edge instead
of it meeting the gum line properly.
However, it was a long expensive process, and I don't know how they go
about removing and re-doing an implant---it might be too damaging to the
jawbone, so I leave it alone. I do wish I had gone to a different
dentist to have it done, but that is water long under the
bridge..............LOL.

I don't see that the metal posts required for dental implants can be
much better than fillings or crowns...

Removal of all teeth is a very poor solution, what they don't tell you
about dentures is that the jaw doesn't receive enough stimulation and the
bone starts receding and thinning. My father suffered a lot with dentures.
I'm wondering about dental implants. Are they a good solution for
replacing missing teeth or do they create a place for bacteria to multiply
like a root canal?
