Unless things have changed substantially, the Japanese use the side opposite the one used in this hemisphere. Not sure why. But the earth's magnetic field changes depending on which hemisphere's field is being pushed by the solar wind. So maybe that is why--their field being pushed when our's is not. Can't recall just what all that is called, but there are those on this list who will know and maybe tell us how to do further searching. Phillpot is the name of a pioneer researcher in the U.S. In one of his books on using magnets, some of the info in the preface literally pushed me out of my chair and made me hop around.
