I have this same set-up, and I always use distilled water with it. I've never had a batch not "brew", and I don't use any additives such as salt.

I don't remember now if the water was supposed to be distilled, with a pinch of salt, or drinking water. I do remember having problems when the water was too pure because the process didn't seem to work. Perhaps if I had used distilled water, and just waited long enough (and had a way to test the PPM as I do now), it would have eventually made a good grade of CS. Jill
