This is an important insight for all of us. Marketing-based information 
goes only a *very* short way towards giving us the evidence we need to 
make an informed decision on a treatment option.

The standard I apply is that I need to hear about a product or therapy 
from multiple individuals, preferably people that I know and respect, 
and definitely people who are *NOT* trying to sell me something.

The best way I've found to do that is to become a member of a community 
that is interested in alternative health and get to know as many people 
there as I can... The handiest illustration being this Silver List, of 
course.

And that's why I impose the prohibition on blatant marketing activities 
and require that vendors or representatives keep their sales efforts 
below the signature and private, and prohibit them from commenting on 
their own or other products in a competitive way.

Admittedly, people will sometimes mention products they have a 
marketing interest in, but I look for a pattern of responsible 
behavior, emphasis on personal experience over ignorant marketing hype, 
and a willingness to encourage members to research other sources. 

I ask anyone who wants to mention something that they sell to contact 
me privately to discuss it.  

I monitor several mailing lists and forums. Which ones has varied over 
the years. This cybernetic "over the back fence" form of communication 
is one of the most powerful agents of change we have. You can be proud 
of your role in it.
