Hello, Anna!

I once did a run with "spring water" instead of distilled. If you're
*SURE* you picked up the right jug of water... <grin>

Then the other possibilities are, as you suspect, the water was bad
from the store, or it became contaminated while sitting, or else
something contaminated the brewing cell.

Things to try:

A new jug of water...
A different brand of water...
Clean the brewing cell thoroughly...

All it would probably take is for somebody to take a swig direct from
the jug to contaminate it enough to matter. Or if the jug sat around
open for a while, it could have picked up enough dissolved carbon
dioxide to increase the conductivity too much. Or if you attempted to
clean the cell and left a little soap residue or finger oils around.

Cleaning things between runs: The most I usually do is wipe the
electrodes with a clean, dry paper napkin (leaves the least lint). The
jar, if I do anything at all, I'll rinse with some 3% hydrogen
peroxide, which eats up any silver coating very quickly, then rinse
three times with a few ounces of distilled water.

Getting one of the inexpensive ($20 to $30 US) TDS (Total Dissolved
Solids) meters that several places sell would give you a way to
independently test the quality of your distilled water.

Try again and let us know what you find out, please.

Be well,

Mike D.
