It may usually be Herpes simples, but I believe there are other causes. For example, my husband gets a clear blister on his lips after eating walnuts. It seems to be an allergic reaction and does not happen without the walnuts. He can eat other nuts without a reaction.
I find altenating between yogurt and Aloe vera gel applied from a freshly cut open and macerated Aloe vera leaf to be very effective on cold sores or blisters, whatever the cause.
