There are many ways to improve on the design, such as your recommendation. And it would be nice to not need to physically switch the electrodes in order to change the polarity (though it only needs to be done every 10-20 minutes to avoid skin irritation). Folks who have no experience with electrical components can still use a battery and some wire. They can purchase a lantern battery in a variety of places very cheaply, and hooking it up has only one option - the two battery terminals. The 555 timer is an intimidating article when one has no experience with components. It seems to me the Godzilla is a good place to start for rank beginners, then, when ones confidence has grown, move on to such as you suggest.
