It took some time with Google, but I was able to finally get past the
news wire stories to some commentaries that actually talked about what
was going on with the child's medical situation.

The "lifesaving surgery" the mother was trying to protect him from was
the precautionary insertion of tubes and fittings to allow him to
undergo dialysis *if he needed it.* Despite news reports that the child
was in iminent danger, the hospital said that he wasn't. A woman
nephrologist on the case had to call in Child Protective Services
*three times* before she got an agent that would support her assertion
of medical neglect. The first two supported the mom.

It turns out the congenital kidney condition runs in her family. An
adult relative never had any treatment for it and is healthy and normal
today. Another relative had a kidney transplant that they regret, the
articles say.

Considering that the doctors were telling her from day one that the
baby had little chance of survival, it appears that the mother's
efforts with natural treatments (nutritional support, detoxifying
baths, (get this!) a low-stress environment) have been turning out
pretty well. Obviously that didn't set too well with certain people.

I guess that low stress environment idea is shot to hell.

These two articles are from a stridently feminist web site some may
have difficulty with, but is the only place I found the medical issues
discussed in any detail:

Not a pretty situation.

Be well,
