This allows good sealing with uneven surfaces. There is a magnetic strip in the front of the seal that provides a clamping force against the front surface of the refrigerator when it is closed. Cleaning the folds can be difficult. I'd recommend trying soap and an old toothbrush. Best Wishes, Mike M
